Smart home lighting has made great strides in the past few years. We no longer talk about weird bulb replacements here or there. Instead, smart lighting has really become a manifesto, an artwork that you proudly display on the wall.

Nanoleaf's latest product is a product called Nanoleaf line, similar to their other products, customers are required to stick these products on the wall, but use easy-to-remove tape to avoid damaging your paint.

These smart lights work on a hexagonal connector system, allowing you to generate lines in almost any direction you like, making the number of potential designs almost unlimited. Fortunately, if you need some inspiration, the app will provide some help.

From each connector, you connect a wire containing a multi-color LED light strip that illuminates the wall behind it. This is indeed a simple design, the lamp is about a finger width away from the wall, and it allows the light to flood up to 10 cm on both sides of the line.

Once you have settled on a design, you can start playing with colors and animations to bring the space to life, and I am not prepared for how bright these are.

After living with Nanoleaf Lines in my home office for a few weeks, it's time to elaborate on whether they should be on your Christmas list.

The design of this lighting system is very clever, providing almost endless configurations, creating unique lights every time.

Our setup includes a starter pack with 9 wires and 3 more wires, so the design I determined contains 12 wires and 12 connectors. If I choose, these can be easily expanded in the future, which is also a good attribute of the design. There is no doubt that the more impressive designs you see online contain more lines, which obviously comes with considerable financial investment, but if you consider it as smart art, it may be worth it.

The advantage of these design methods is that there is no direct light on your face, all the light emitted is reflected light, and this light has spread to you. I also like the design of the optical components. The all-white plastic has only a subtle Nanoleaf logo on one of the lines.

The hexagonal connector allows each line to snap into place and obtain power and data, becoming part of the system, controlled by the mobile application. Each connector has a cover to hide unused connection points, which provides a cleaner design.

There is also a special controller connector with simple on/off buttons, brightness control, and the ability to move and switch to music/audio power animation in lighting effects. I put this control module within reach, if I choose to turn them off by physical touch at the end of the night, the effect will be great.

In today's world where so many people live online, whether it is YouTube or Twitch, RGB lighting has indeed become the main content in the background of the stream.

Not only do these look cool in photos or videos, but smart lighting can actually help illuminate you. I put these in front of me, and often turned them on before the team call, set them to white or daylight theme, and noticed that my lighting improved significantly during the call.

Other times, such as now, when I write at night, I prefer to set them to slower, more subtle animations, but more detailed color combinations. Usually I will fall on things including blue and purple, but maybe through green animation.

Finally, the most difficult part of setting up the Nanoleaf cord is finding a way to hide the power cord. This also requires some creativity to ensure that it does not become the focus and detract from the overall appearance. Ideally, you can route energy to the wall, make the whole thing look amazing, and make visitors question how this is possible, but obviously most people won't be keen on reaching this level.

Speaking of features, there is a lot to say. First of all, these can lights can be set according to any mood and can use more than 16 million colors. Unlike some lighting solutions, each line can be set to 2 bright color areas per line, not just a single color selection.

Using the mobile app, you can choose from 19 built-in scenes, create your own RGB animations, and even download more options from the Nanoleaf user community.

Not long ago, lighting vendors sold music integration as a separate optional component. Fortunately, we are now seeing a lot of just integrating this feature, and we found that there are Nanoleaf Lines here. In this mode, you can use Rhythm Music Visualiser to turn your favorite songs into color and light shows, and feel every beat like never before. If you are hosting a party, this is definitely a topic.

Although the mobile app is great, you can also download apps for Windows and Mac to control the lights from your desktop. This enables you to synchronize colors from the screen to the lines through the Screen Mirror function, immersing yourself in a new game and movie night experience.

If this is not enough for you, you can even use Razer's Chroma lights to synchronize the lights with other RBG peripherals. This kind of cross-company integration is indeed very worth seeing, and it is very popular with consumers.

This integration continues to support voice control. The Nanoleaf series can be controlled by Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. If you already have a smart speaker in your home, especially within the location where you install Lines, you can direct it through voice commands.

These Apple users can also integrate and control lights through a single interface of HomeKit. The fun doesn't stop there, it also provides IFTTT support for event-based color alerts and even SmartThings.

Normally, I use this section to elaborate on issues or areas for improvement, but in fact, I don’t have anything about Nanoleaf Lines. They are a product as advertised, providing excellent mobile and desktop applications, and integration with 3rd party smart home products.

This design may not be suitable for everyone, but if you see a design made by Lines and like it, please buy this product and get creative.

Although I have no intention of doing this, some designs include mounting them on the roof, so a 90-degree connector may be required to move them from the wall to the roof.

Of course, I want the cost to be lower so that more people can afford to add them to their settings, but this is a well thought out product that demonstrates Nanoleaf's excellent engineering.

The Nanoleaf Lines starter kit (9-pack) costs AU$348 and is now available from retailers such as JB HiFi. At that price, you will get a package that includes 9x cables, 9x mounting connectors and caps, 10x mounting plates with tape, 1x controller, 1x processor and power connector, 1x power supply, and 1x quick start guide.

There is also a 15-piece starter kit priced at AU$549. If you are pursuing a more comprehensive design, or just want more options, then you should consider this.

If you find that you need more, you can also choose to buy a 3-pack for AUD 119. Each line is close to $40. These are not cheap, but they are unique, so it is difficult to find a good comparison.

Nowadays, many companies are fighting for your smart lighting dollar, but Nanoleaf continues to attract people’s attention because they have launched one after another uniquely designed and powerful products that allow you to have both the shape and the function. Products in demand.

Before starting with the idiot of my choice, I first tried many different ideas on the floor and used the lighting designer in the app to get more ideas. After identifying a diamond with a diamond as the center and extending it horizontally with a symmetrical design, I made a promise and am very satisfied with my decision.

In the end, the layout and choice of lighting colors and animations actually depend on your creativity, and the product is flexible and extensible enough to truly support this creativity.

If you want to improve your bedroom, office or living room space, then you should definitely consider Nanoleaf Lines, they are a great addition to the smart lighting and smart home categories.
