Back to the Future trilogy (September 1) Great Scott! After a long, long spring and summer full of lockdowns and uncertainty, who wouldn’t want to go back in time for a few hours and get away from it all? These classic time traveling tales are the perfect nostalgia-laden antidote for the COVID blues.
I’m Thinking of Ending Things (September 4) Based on the truly twisted 2016 debut novel by Ian Reid and directed by the incredible Charlie Kaufman, this film about a young woman who goes on a road trip to meet her new boyfriend’s parents is sure to stay with you long after the credits roll.
Away– season 1 (September 4) In this new drama from Jason Katims (of Friday Night Lights and Parenthood fame) Hillary Swank stars as the captain of a three-year mission to Mars. The series splits its time between the crew’s dangerous space adventure and the toll it takes on their families back on Earth.
The Babysitter: Killer Queen (September 10) The sequel to 2017’s horror comedy The Babysitter, this new installment picks up two years later with the blood cult from the first film returning from the grave to complete a ritual that will bring them back for good.
Ratched– season 1 (September 18) The infamous nurse from the Academy Award winning film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is the star in this Ryan Murphy-helmed series. Sarah Paulson plays the iconic Nurse Ratched at the beginning of her career, before she became a lobotomy-loving monster.
Enola Holmes (September 23) Starring Stranger Things alum Millie Bobby Brown, this family-friendly mystery is based on the children’s book series by Nancy Springer. Brown stars as the title character, who enlists her famous brothers’ help after their mother (played by the always amazing Helena Bonham Carter) goes missing.
Whose Vote Counts, Explained– limited series (September 28) Fears about the voting process being rigged- by powerful donors and corporations, gerrymandering, the Electoral College, voter suppression, fraud at the ballot box, and the ways votes are counted- are untangled in this original docuseries, just in time for the end of this year’s wild presidential election cycle.
Woke– season 1 (September 9) In this timely satire starring New Girl alum Lamorne Morris, Keef Knight is a Black cartoonist on the verge of syndicating his lighthearted comic strip when he’s racially profiled by police and is tackled to the ground, handcuffed and roughed-up. After the harrowing incident, liquor bottles, trash cans and pens appear to come to life, urging Keef to embrace his identity as a Black man and use it in his art.
PEN15– season 2 (September 18) This Emmy-nominated series is back with more early-aughts nostalgia as two awkward middle schoolers continue in their quest to grow into womanhood.
Trolls World Tour (September 18) Universal’s sequel to their 2016 hit Trolls made waves earlier this year when the studio released it On Demand in the midst of the COVID lockdown, angering movie theaters who saw the move as a threat to future releases. The film, which centers on the original characters attempting to save their tribe from the aggressive Hard Rock Trolls, is set to find an even larger audience when it reaches Hulu this month.
Fargo– season 4 (September 28) Noah Hawley’s incredible black comedy crime drama returns for its fourth season. This go round, the action takes place in Kansas City in the 1950s and stars Chris Rock, Jason Schwartzman, Timothy Olyphant and Jessie Buckley. Rather than being able to binge the entire season, you can watch a new episode each week on Hulu the day after it airs on FX.
The Graduate (September 1) Dustin Hoffman became a household name after his performance in this Oscar-winning 1967 classic about an aimless college graduate who is seduced by an older woman.
The Boys– season 2 (September 16) Based on the comic book series, this diabolically deranged superhero show returns for a new season of sex, swearing and subversion. When superpowered “heroes” use their gifts for evil and profit, a band of misfits known as the Boys take it upon themselves to expose the god-like celebrities for the scum they are.
Gemini Man (September 22) Will Smith stars opposite a CGI version of himself as an aging assassin on the verge of retirement who is scheduled to be eliminated by his younger, faster clone. The special effects in the Ang Lee-directed thriller took two years and 500 visual effects artists to create, making it a game-changer in the tech department.
Utopia– season 1 (September 25) This thriller was adapted by novelist Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl) from the 2013 British series of the same name. In it, a group of fans attempt to uncover hidden meanings in the pages of their favorite comic book and discover a vast conspiracy heralding the end of the world. The series stars a slew of talented newcomers, along with heavy-hitters like Rainn Wilson and John Cusack.
Raised By Wolves– season 1 (September 3) Ridley Scott produces and directs the first two episodes of this new sci-fi drama about two androids tasked with raising human children on a mysterious new planet after the Earth is destroyed by war.
Unpregnant (September 10) In this female-driven road film, a pregnant teenager convinces her former friend to accompany her out of state to have an abortion. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Ted Caplan and Jenni Hendriks.
We Are Who We Are– season 1 (September 14) Acclaimed Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnio (Call Me by Your Name) created and directed this coming-of-age limited series. It follows two American 14-year-olds living on a U.S. military base in Italy in 2016. The series explores friendship, first-love, identity, and all the messy exhilaration and anguish of being a teenager.
The Third Day– season 1 (September 14) In this miniseries, a man (Jude Law) and a woman (Naomie Harris) make separate journeys to a mysterious island off the British coast. The series will be split into three parts with three interconnected stories, the second of which consisting of a live “major, immersive theatre event” to be shot in London in one continuious take.
The Invisible Man (September 19) In this updated take on the classic H.G. Wells story, a woman (Elizabeth Moss) is terrorized by her ex (Oliver Jackson-Cohen), a crazed scientist who faked his own death in order to torment her for leaving him.
Just Mercy (September 26) This critically acclaimed film is based on the true story of Bryan Stevenson (played by Michael B. Jordan), a young defense attorney determined to free a man (Jamie Foxx) sentenced to death for a heinous crime he did not commit.
Long Way Up– season 1 (September 18) In this documentary series, actor Ewan McGregor and his friend Charley Boorman travel 13,000 miles around Central and South America on electric Harley Davidson motorcycles.
Tehran (September 25) This highly-anticipated espionage thriller stars Niv Suten as a Mossad agent who goes on a dangerous undercover mission to Tehran. It’s Apple TV+’s first non-English content, with most of the dialogue spoken in Hebrew and Farsi.

Mulan (September 4) Disney’s live action remake of their film Mulan was slated to be one of the summer’s biggest box office draws- and then came coronavirus. Rather than wait for moviegoers to return, the film will be released on Disney+ this month to those with Premier Access, a $30 add-on created specifically for this film (for now). Those who don’t wish to fork over the dough will have to wait until December to view the flick on the streaming service.
Becoming– season 1 (September 18) This LeBron James-produced docuseries focuses on the upbringings of world-class entertainers, musicians, and athletes. Anthony Davis, Caleb McLaughlin, Candace Parker and Nick Cannon are among the celebs who will be featured.
Once Upon a Time– the complete series (September 18) This ABC darling mashes up characters from Disney stories and other media to create a richly layered, highly watchable series that spanned seven seasons. The show will be streaming in its entirety later this month on Disney+.
Gordon Ramsey: Uncharted– season 2 (September 25) In this food/travel docuseries, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey travels around the world, meeting with indigenous people to learn about their foods and culture. He then teams up with local chefs to prepare a feast for his hosts using his new knowledge of the area.
A.P. Bio– season 3 (September 3) The third season of Mike O’Brian’s sitcom A.P. Bio will air in its entirety on NBC’s new streaming service, Peacock. Glenn Howerton stars as a disgraced Harvard professor who is forced to return to his hometown and work as a biology teacher, a job that he doesn’t take seriously, much to the chagrin of his high-achieving students.
Black Boys (September 10) This documentary celebrates the full humanity of Black men and boys in America. Produced by activist and two-time Super Bowl champion Malcom Jenkins, “the film reveals the emotional landscape of those experiencing racism and invites us to reimagine an America in which Black boys experience true belonging and unlimited possibilities.”
