Archie Battersbee's parents filed an urgent appeal to the Supreme Court on Thursday seeking to halt rulings by lower courts to allow doctors to legally withdraw life support from their son.

Deshaun Watson sprinted onto the field to a light round of cheers Saturday at the Cleveland Browns’ first open practice of training camp. The noticeably muted reaction reflected the uncertainty surrounding Cleveland’s controversial new quarterback. Watson was the focal point as the Browns worked out in front of a near-capacity crowd at their suburban headquarters. He briefly waved while running to the middle of the practice fields, but did not speak with the media. The 26-year-old quarterback is awaiting a decision from retired judge Sue L. Robinson. She’s determining if Watson violated the NFL’s personal conduct policy after being accused of sexual misconduct by 24 massage therapists. A lengthy suspension is possible.
AJ Allmendinger continued his dominance of NASCAR road course racing and set himself up for a sweep at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with a Saturday win in the Xfinity Series. Allmendinger has won six of the last 11 road course races and nine in his NASCAR career. His latest victory is his third of the Xfinity season and gives him road wins this year at Circuit of the Americas in Texas, Portland and now the hallowed Brickyard. Allmendinger is the defending winner of the Cup race and on Sunday will go for the sweep.

One of the last remaining Navajo Code Talkers has died. Samuel Sandoval's wife, Malula, says he died late Friday at a hospital in Shiprock, New Mexico. He was 98. Hundreds of Navajos were recruited from the vast Navajo Nation to serve as Code Talkers during World War II. Sandoval's death leaves three still alive today. The code that was based on the then-unwritten Navajo language confounded Japanese military cryptologists and helped the U.S. win the war. The Code Talkers are celebrated annually on Aug. 14, the date the Japanese surrendered. Malula Sandoval said her husband had been looking forward to the celebration.

A Canadian citizen who led propaganda efforts for the Islamic State group and personally executed two Syrian soldiers in widely circulated videos has been sentenced to life in prison by a U.S. judge. Prosecutors sought the life sentence Friday at a hearing in Alexandria, Virginia, for 39-year-old Mohammed Khalifa, a Saudi-born Canadian captured in 2019. Khalifa played a key role in the group's successful efforts to recruit tens of thousands of foreign fighters to defend its self-proclaimed caliphate. In two notorious videos titled Flames of War, Khalifa narrates the action and can be seen shooting Syrian soldiers in the back of the head after they dug their own graves. Khalifa’s defense attorneys had sought a term of just 20 years.
A Wheeling attorney has been elected chair of the West Virginia Republican Party. Elgine McArdle was chosen Saturday during a meeting of the state GOP executive committee in Charleston. McArdle has been a member of the committee since 2005. She succeeds Mark Harris, who chose not to seek a full four-year term after he was picked in March 2021 to serve the remainder of former chair Melody Potter’s term. McArdle also spent five years as an assistant federal prosecutor for the state’s northern district.

Cuban authorities say a group of 141 Haitian migrants have been stranded on Cuba’s southern coast. It's part of a series of large-scale efforts by Haitian to flee their troubled nation. The official Cubadebate website said the group that arrived at La Tatagua beach in the central province of Cienfuegos on Friday included 22 children and several pregnant women. It said they had set out eight days earlier from Gonave Island, west of the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince. Cubadebate said the group was given medical aid and taken to a youth camp. The migrants said they'd hoped to reach the U.S.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A 23-year-old man who “exited” a plane Friday afternoon before it made an emergency landing at Raleigh-Durham International Airport was found dead around 7 p.m. Friday in Fuquay-Varina, authorities said.
Police say a gunman fatally shot two people at a nail salon in West Virginia before officers fired at the shooter, killing him. Summersville police said Friday that officers responded to an active shooter Thursday evening at Jo’s Nails & Spa. Police say two officers shot the gunman and he was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police identified the alleged shooter as 52-year-old Patrick Wayne Cater and the two victims as 45-year-old Khuyen Van Le and 40-year-old Phi Anh Le. The two victims were married coworkers. Police Chief John Nowak said Cater had been working there earlier, left, and came back with a semiautomatic pistol.
Alexander Rossi snapped a 49-race losing streak that dated all the way back to the 2019 IndyCar season by winning at one of his favorite tracks. Rossi won Saturday on the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where his 2016 victory in the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 jumpstarted his American motorsports career. Rossi’s last victory was at Road America in the 10th race of the 2019 season. Christian Lundgaard finished second to give Rahal Letterman Lanigan its first podium of the season. Will Power finished third for Team Penske and the Chevrolet driver cycled back to the top of the IndyCar standings for the third time this season.

Prosecution agents arrested José Ruben Zamora Marroquín at his home on Friday night, searching his home, seizing telephones and accusing him of money laundering. Zamora Marroquín is a prize-winning journalist who heads the newspaper El Periodico. Human rights activist Eleonora Muralles said officials we not pursuing corrupt people but rather opponents.Journalists protested Saturday outside a courthouse where the case is being heard.U.S. Congressman James P. McGovern, a Massachusetts Democrat, wrote that he was “deeply concerned” by the detention.
Pakistani officials say the country's powerful army chief has contacted Washington, seeking U.S. help in securing an early release of a crucial $1.7 billion installment from the International Monetary Fund to Pakistan. The country is struggling with a deepening economic crisis and is trying to secure tranches from the IMF but there has been a considerable delay. Several government officials told the AP on Saturday that Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa discussed the issue with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman this week, appealing on Washington to use its influence with the IMF to help Pakistan. Pakistani-U.S. relations have been troubled in recent years, mainly over the issue of neighboring Afghanistan, now run by the Taliban.

Daniil Kvyat's anguishing absence from racing will finally end Sunday at Indianapolis. The promising Russian with the Formula One résumé qualified 36th for the NASCAR Cup Series road course race, his first start since late 2020. The 28-year-old posted three podium finishes in seven years on the international circuit. He spent last season as an F1 backup driver and was supposed to drive this year in FIA's world endurance series. But his team withdrew after the governing body imposed sanctions and restrictions on Russians after the country's invasion of Ukraine. Now he'll become the first Russian to start a Cup race.
Federal regulators are giving Boeing the green light to soon resume deliveries of its big 787 airliner. That's according to a person familiar with the situation who talked to The Associated Press on Saturday. Boeing has been forced to stop deliveries of the 787, which it calls the Dreamliner, for most of the last two years because of production problems. But the Federal Aviation Administration is telling Boeing it will approve the company’s process for validating retrofits to each plane so they can be delivered to airline customers. That will create a valuable source of cash for Boeing. The planes are built in Washington state and South Carolina.
A law enforcement official overseeing police reform in Baltimore has been tapped to lead the Phoenix Police Department. Michael Sullivan will join the Phoenix agency in September as interim chief. He's expected to serve up to two years while Phoenix searches for a permanent chief. Current Chief Jeri Williams is retiring. The Phoenix Police Department has been the subject of a wide-ranging federal civil rights investigation. City Manager Jeff Barton noted Sullivan's work in overseeing police reform in Baltimore when he announced his hiring in Phoenix this week. Baltimore has been under federal oversight since 2017 after the U.S. Justice Department released a scathing report detailing longstanding patterns of racial profiling and excessive force.
Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story likely will be out a bit longer than expected after manager Alex Cora said a second-opinion exam revealed a “a little hairline fracture” close to his right wrist. Story has been on the injured list with a bruise since July 14 after getting hit on the right hand with a pitch during a game on July 12 against from Tampa Bay’s right-hand by Corey Kluber. The 29-year-old Story signed a $140-million, six-year deal with the Red Sox during spring training after spending his first six big-league seasons with Colorado.
