The Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV is poised to be the all-electric version of the GLS-Class.

What if we told you that a GLS SUV from the stables of Mercedes-Benz had tied the knots with newly introduced modular architecture for luxury electric vehicles and had a baby? The German automaker's newly introduced EQS electric SUV for the North American and European markets is a cross between a top-of-the-line luxury SUV running on batteries and defining a new class of luxury segment set to go on sale in the US this year.

After postponing (or canceling) plans to launch the EQC SUV, Mercedes-Benz has finally taken the veils off the new luxury electric SUV, a.k.a the EQS. The EQS is the first electric Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) to make it to the US markets, although it is built on the same platform as the earlier EQS sedan. The EQS also features design elements such as a 56-inch Hyper screen which can already be seen in the EQS sedan.

There is no argument against the fact that an emerging future market for premium EVs is increasingly becoming evident to contemporary automakers. Key players such as Tesla have already ventured into the SUV segment with the Tesla Model X. Similarly, BMW also has the iX to give fierce competition to the new EQS SUV from Mercedes. However, the EQS SUV drips of elegance and luxury than a bulky SUV designed to conquer any terrain. Mercedes-Benz unwrapped the new SUV this April, and is all set for production in the automaker's new overseas facility at Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States.

The EQS is Mercedes' second SUV after the EQC, although it is the first electric SUV from the Germans to go for sale in the US markets this year. Mercedes has kept the design language elegant rather than stout, which speaks out for the luxury SUV segment that the car is targeting in the US. More recently, as per market reports, there has been an upward shift in the sales graphs of utility trucks and SUVs in the North American markets compared to sedans and saloons.

Compared to the EQS, the EQS SUV is simply a larger vehicle iteration with the same 56-inch Hyperscreen. Nevertheless, the EQS SUV is taller than the EQS saloon, although sharing the same wheelbase. Other distinct features of the design include a blacked-out grille with three-pointed star Mercedes-Benz logos and all-LED headlamps. The EQS also gets pillar to pillar LED light strips and accessories that can be opted for, by paying a premium. Therefore, a vastly untapped market exists somewhere in the near future where the sales of luxury EVs might dominate other production vehicles, and Mercedes is leaving no stones unturned in taking a bite at that market, currently dominated by Tesla.

The EQS SUV is offered in two trim levels – an RWD 450+ and a dual-motor sporting 580 4MATIC. The former will produce 355 horsepower and around 419 pound-feet of torque through the rear-axle motor, while the latter will produce a higher 536 horses and about 633 pound-feet of torque. As confirmed by Mercedes officials, the 4MATIC trim will feature the Torque Shift function enabling "seamless variable distribution of drive torque between the rear and front electric motors."

The German automaker is yet to reveal further information about top speed and acceleration. However, the new electric SUV will be powered by a 107.8 kWh battery pack, rendering it around 370 miles on a single charge. Mercedes claims that the EQS SUV can be juiced up from 10% to 80% using DC charging options within under half an hour, although the actual figures are yet to be determined. With a range of more than 370 miles on a single charge, and if such fast-charging capabilities are to be believed, then the EQS SUV will be one of the best value EVs set to hit the US markets this year.

Till now, Mercedes has not hinted toward a possible segmentation or positioning of the EQS SUV. The EQS Sedan, on the other hand, is priced roughly between $102,000 and $126,000 in the US markets. Thus, the EQS SUV is expected to retail at a price north of the $100,000 range. With the electric SUV, Mercedes is determined to take a large chunk of the market dominated by Tesla, bringing the vehicle into direct competition with the luxurious Model X. Another significant competition that Mercedes will have to look out for in the US markets is the BMW iX which is priced relatively lower.
