As the golf of Volkswagen’s crossovers, T-Roc is preparing for a facelift in 2022. We are not only talking about standard models, but also about high-performance R and quirky convertibles. Yes, more than two years after its official debut at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, Wolfsburg's only model with a folding roof has been updated.

Like recent popular products such as Polo, Golf and Tiguan, the T-Roc series got an LED light bar that splits the front grille into two. You will have to upgrade to more complex matrix headlights, because the smaller, also LED setup has a normal grille without wide lighting bars. Speaking of car lights, there are new stacked fog lights that also use light-emitting diodes, and the tail lights have also been updated with dynamic turn signals, but at an additional cost.

The Germans said that they improved the color palette and redesigned the alloy wheels, ranging in size from 17 inches to 19 inches. The R-Line upgrade is still available, bringing some of the sports visual adjustments of the full fat R without the premium required by a more powerful engine. The bumper has also made some slight changes, but in general, the T-Roc remains basically the same. If it is not a light bar, it is difficult to distinguish the 2022 model from the pre-redesigned version.

Walking into the cabin, the change is even more significant, because even the basic model will be equipped with a digital instrument panel. However, the most obvious novelty is the center console, where the vents have been moved to a lower position to make room for the top infotainment system with a 9.2-inch diagonal. The cheaper trim comes with a 6.5 or 8 inch touch screen.

T-Roc now uses Volkswagen's latest MIB3 infotainment technology, and can optionally be equipped with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. In addition, it has switched to touch-sensitive climate control, as used in the facelifted Polo, Tiguan and Arteon.

Under the hood, you will find common suspects. The lineup starts with a three-cylinder 1.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine that can provide 110 horsepower (81 kW) of power to the front axle. The larger four-cylinder 1.5-liter TSI increases the power to 150 horsepower (110 kW) while retaining the front-wheel drive layout. Upgrade to a 2.0-liter TSI rated at 190 horsepower (140 kW) and you will get 4Motion as standard.

Volkswagen still believes that the diesel vehicle market is large enough to provide a pair of 2.0-liter TDI, one with 115 horsepower (85 kW) and the other with 150 horsepower (110 kW). The former is strictly an FWD event, while the other can be equipped with an optional full-claw system. According to your choice, T-Roc can be equipped with a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The T-Roc R is again at the top of the series, with its powerful 300 horsepower (224 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) sprinting from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.9 seconds . Audi SQ2's more mainstream brother models are only equipped with DSG and 4Motion and start control functions. There is no doubt that a sporty crossover with four exhaust systems will reach an electronically controlled 155 mph (250 km/h).

Considering that T-Roc R will continue to provide only fixed roofs, the days when Volkswagen sold the Golf R Cabriolet are gone, even in spirit. If you want a convertible with a three-layer fabric roof, it only offers front-wheel drive and 1.0 and 1.5-liter TSI engines. Both are equipped with a six-speed manual transmission as standard, but the four-cylinder engine can optionally be connected to DSG.

Since its launch four years ago, T-Roc has sold more than one million vehicles, and Volkswagen hopes that the mid-term facelift can keep customer demand at a high level.
